September 10 – 20, 2017

Day 1: Sunday, September 10th, 2017 • Depart U.S.
Our adventure begins as we depart on our transatlantic flight to Zurich, Switzerland.

Day 2: Monday, September 11th, 2017 • Zurich
We meet our guide at the airport and travel north of Zurich to visit the Rhine Falls, the largest waterfall in Europe. We experience the feeling of the roar and the vibrations over our entire body. The Rhine Falls were formed more than 15,000 years ago when Ice Age shifts in the tectonic plates forced the Rhine River into a new riverbed. We enjoy lunch at Park am Rheinfall, a restaurant with large windows providing a fantastic view over the falls. We return to Zurich for a guided walking tour of Zurich’s Old Town. We then check into our hotel and have the evening free for individual interests. L

Day 3: Tuesday, September 12th, 2017 • Appenzell – Vaduz – Lucerne
We check out of our hotel early this morning and drive to the Appenzell district, where we join a Whisky Trek tour. As every mountain inn has a store with a special and unique whisky, there will be plenty to choose from! We make a quick stop at Brauerei Locher AG to buy some Appenzeller Bier. We then move on to the tiny country of Liechtenstein, with a stop in Vaduz to explore on our own. Our last destination today is Lucerne, our home for the next two nights. B/L

Day 4: Wednesday, September 13th, 2017 • Lucerne
We begin our day with a walking tour of Lucerne. We see the famous wooden Chapel Bridge, the sculptured, poignant Lion Monument, and other city highlights. After lunch (on our own) we take a cruise on Lake Lucerne. We have a day pass that allows us to hop on/ hop off. Depending on our whim, we might jump off at Weggins, Vitznau, Beckenried, Rütli, Brunnen and/or Flüelen. Upon our return to Lucerne, we will have more time to wander through this beautiful city. We can shop for chocolate or wood carvings or take a long walk along the lake’s beautiful esplanade. B

Day 5: Thursday, September 14th, 2017 • Lauterbrunnen – Kleine Scheidegg – Grindelwald – Interlaken
Departing lovely Lucerne, we first cross the Brunig Pass and arrive at the international resort town of Interlaken. We then reach Lauterbrunnen, the “village of the waterfalls.” Here a cogwheel train brings us to Kleine Scheidegg for a spectacular panoramic view of Jungfrau mountain peaks and a lunch break before riding down the other side of the mountain to Grindelwald, the “village of the glaciers.” We then transfer back to Interlaken where dinner and a Swiss Folklore Show awaits us. B/D

Day 6: Friday, September 15th, 2017 • Bern – Montreaux
Today we will make a visit into Bern, the lovely capital of Switzerland. This old university town is built on a sandstone ridge, surrounded on three sides by the Aare River. Some of the interesting sights to note include the Renaissance-style Bundeshaus, the elegant Gerechtigkeitsgasse, and the Bärengraben, the circular bear-pit in which bears, the symbol of Bern, have been kept since 1480. We have time to explore on our own before we transfer to a Gruyère cheese farm La Maison du Gruyère where we enjoy a fondue lunch. Our last destination today is Montreux on the crystal-clear Lake Leman where we visit Chillon Castle, made famous by Byron’s work, “The Prisoner of Chillon.” We overnight in the Montreaux area. B/L

Day 7: Saturday, September 16th, 2017 • Valais – Zermatt
We check out from our hotel and continue our tour to Zermatt. Our first stop will be at Valais winery where we also enjoy our lunch. We then move on to Saas-Fee where we take a gondola to Mittelallalin to visit the ice pavilion. We continue to Zermatt, famous as a mountaineering and ski resort in the Swiss Alps. This mountain town permits no gas driven vehicles…. meaning no cars or vehicles unless electric or pulled by animals. We arrive at our hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure. B/L

Day 8: Sunday, September 17th, 2017 • Zermatt
Early this morning, we may hear the cow bells as the farmers take their cows to pasture. Later we enjoy a delicious Swiss breakfast perhaps with some of the cheese produced by those cows. Our day is entirely free for individual interests. Those who wish to taste local rye bread can do so at the town bakery. Those who fancy air dried meat can do so at a local butchery. B

Day 9: Monday, September 18th, 2017 • Zermatt – St. Moritz
After breakfast this morning, we board the Glacier Express to St. Moritz. This is considered one of the most beautiful train rides in Europe with breathtaking views of snowcapped mountains and waterfalls. We arrive in St. Moritz late this afternoon. We meet our coach and transfer to our hotel for dinner and drinks. B/D

Day 10: Tuesday, September 19th, 2017 • St. Moritz – Sirmione
Twice host of the Winter Olympics, St. Moritz has a world championship bobsled trek made of natural ice and an outdoor Olympic ice rink. However, St. Moritz first became famous thanks to its mineral springs, first discovered 3,000 years ago, that have established the alpine town as a summer spa resort. We have time to relax and explore on our own before we transfer to the airport hotel or Sirmione, Italy for the post tour extension. B

Day 11: Wednesday, September 20th, 2017 • Return
For some of us our tour comes to an end as we transfer to the airport for a return flight home.
